Actor Barkhad Abdi earned only $65,000 for his widely praised role in Captain Phillips

Barkhad Abdi’s journey to Hollywood is a remarkable tale of perseverance, humility, and the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1985, Abdi and his family fled the civil war when he was seven, eventually settling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Before his breakthrough role, he worked various jobs, including as a limousine driver and at his brother’s mobile phone store.

His life changed dramatically when he answered an open casting call for Captain Phillips (2013), a film starring Tom Hanks that dramatized the real-life hijacking of the Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. Abdi, who had no prior acting experience, landed the role of the lead pirate, Abduwali Muse. His chilling and memorable performance—especially the iconic line, “Look at me. I’m the captain now.”—earned him critical acclaim, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a BAFTA Award win.

However, despite his newfound fame, financial success did not follow immediately. Abdi was paid just $65,000 for his role, a modest sum in the film industry, especially considering the movie grossed over $218 million worldwide. After the awards season, he found himself struggling to secure more acting roles. Without steady work, he returned to Minneapolis, at one point even borrowing a suit to attend the Oscars.

His story underscores the challenges faced by many actors, especially those from non-traditional backgrounds. While some achieve overnight wealth and recognition, others struggle despite critical success. Abdi’s perseverance eventually paid off, as he later landed roles in films like Eye in the Sky (2015) alongside Helen Mirren and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). His journey from a refugee to an Oscar-nominated actor continues to inspire aspiring performers worldwide, proving that success in Hollywood often comes with struggle, patience, and resilience.
